A short statement of what the material here is, what it is worth relying on, and what may be done with it.
These terms describe an editorial publication. They are not an agreement about software and confer no rights over any game discussed.Everything published here is editorial judgement supported by measurements taken by hand. The timings are real and were recorded as described on the grading page, but they are single observations made once, by one person, on one machine, and should be read as evidence for an argument rather than as specifications.
Where a review states that a rule was not retained at ten hours, that is a statement about one player's recall under a described test. It is offered because the pattern across forty-one openings is consistent, not because a single result would prove anything.
The score assesses a game. The opening grade assesses how that game handed over its rules. Neither is a prediction about how a particular reader will get on with it, and the two frequently disagree — a game with an opening we criticise sharply may still carry one of the higher scores in the file.
Nothing here should be read as advice about whether to spend money. The hours logged are printed on every review so that a reader can weigh the judgement against the amount of play behind it.
Titles discussed here are the work of their respective developers and publishers, and every trade name mentioned belongs to its owner. Their use in these pages is for identification and commentary, which is the ordinary business of reviewing, and implies no association with or endorsement by anybody.
No game files, no assets extracted from a game, and no material belonging to a developer are hosted here. The images on these pages were made for this publication.
Quote as much as an argument needs, with attribution and a link to the page quoted. The measurements in particular exist to be repeated and disputed, and a reader who reproduces a timing and gets a different figure is doing exactly what the published procedure invites.
Wholesale republication of a review, and any use that presents this material as somebody else's work or as promotional copy for a game, is not permitted.
Errors are inevitable in work of this kind and are corrected in the body of the review rather than removed. Where a change alters a stated figure or a conclusion, the change is described in the text so that a reader can see what it used to say.
Games are also revised after release. A timing recorded on a version available at the time of writing may no longer describe the game a reader installs today, and this is the most common source of honest disagreement with anything published here.
